GSM means grams per square metre. It is one of the most common measures used to compare towel weight, but it should not be treated as a complete measure of quality.
What GSM tells you
A higher GSM towel contains more material per square metre. In practice, that can increase perceived plushness, absorbency and weight. It can also increase drying time, laundry load weight and the amount of stock required to keep rooms turning efficiently.
Lower GSM does not automatically mean lower quality
A well-constructed lighter towel may be better suited to high-turnover operations because it can wash and dry more quickly. Fibre quality, yarn, pile, construction and finishing all influence performance.
Typical hospitality decision bands
Rather than treating one GSM as universally correct, BBC recommends choosing according to the operating model. Mid-weight towels can suit high-frequency laundering and practical hotel operations. Heavier 500–600 GSM ranges can support a more luxurious guest feel, while very heavy towels should be evaluated against laundry capacity and drying time.
Compare 450, 500 and 600 GSM in context
- Around 450 GSM: potentially faster to process and easier to turn through commercial laundry cycles.
- Around 500 GSM: a useful middle ground where guest comfort and operational practicality can be balanced.
- Around 600 GSM: typically heavier and more substantial, suitable where a plush luxury feel is important and laundry capacity can support it.
Fibre composition matters
GSM does not tell you whether a towel is cotton, Turkish cotton, bamboo-rayon/cotton or another construction. BBC therefore keeps fibre claims separate from GSM claims. See 100% Cotton Hotel Linen South Africa for verified cotton options.
Dimensions matter too
A 600 GSM hand towel and a 600 GSM bath sheet are very different laundry loads. Always specify finished dimensions alongside GSM so housekeeping and laundry teams understand the actual product being purchased.
What hotels should record in a towel specification
Record product name, finished size, GSM, fibre composition, colour, border or edge construction, branding, care requirements, room category and approved substitute. Then connect the towel choice to the property's PAR level.
